Day 15 – A Set Back

By Dan

For the past 7 days I have been working very long days. Disney hired me to work what they call a “Press Event”. This is when they are announcing a new program/ride/initiative and they invite press from all over the world to Disney World.

Normally work should not get in the way of a weight loss program but this type of job does. I have to drive 1.5 hours each direction and on top of that my shortest day at work was 11 hours, that means I was out of the house for 14 hours on my shortest day, with the average day being 18.

On our assignment board somebody put a quote “Sleep is for the weak” and then somebody changed the quote to say “No sleep this week”. And that was very true.

Sadly I did not get to run this week at all. I did however put quite a few miles on my shoes while walking around the park. My weight has not changed, but that is good news because for the last week my diet has been “Eat what you can when you can”!

So, tomorrow I have to leave for work at 3:30am, but I will be home by 1pm. I am going to get out on the road and try to keep my running times up!

I hope it works out!

A LONG Day at Work

So today is a planned running day, I should have got out and put in 2 miles! Right now I am planning on running every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Well, that plan did not work out quite as well as I hoped!

I had to be in Tampa (a 2 and a half hour drive) to do a shoot for ABC New Nightline by 7AM! So I woke up at 4:30 got ready and hit the road. I was hoping to be home in time to run, but I just now walked in the door and it is 10:00PM. A long day!

So the plan is to wake up early and run tomorrow! My legs are feeling good after having two days off so I am going to push it kind of hard tomorrow! Then off to work again!

Day 8 – 2 miles

Distance: 2 Miles
Pace: 9:42 / Mile

So, I ran my best pace today. 9:42 per mile (previous was 10.5 per mile). Not terribly impressive, but it is better than anything I have done since I started trying to get back into shape.

I am very surprised to have my best pace today. While running I felt heavier, even though the scale says I am one pound lighter, and I felt slower even though the clock said I was faster.

Last night was the Super Bowl and I was at a friend’s house pretty late. I didn’t get to sleep until around 2:30 am and I didn’t eat the best yesterday either so I have a feeling that is why I felt heavy and slow!

Week 1 Review

Weight Loss

Starting Weight: 225lbs
Ending Weight: 224lbs

So I only lost 1 pound this week, but it is a start in the right direction! I think that as I get into better cardio shape I will be burring more fat with each workout and start to drop 2 or 3 pounds a week! At least that is what I hope for!

Exercise

Distance Ran: 6 miles
Distance Biked: 0

So I didn’t get on the bike this week as planned. My legs just were not up to it after running. They get sore pretty easy right now and run low on energy after a 2-mile run. I hope to be able to ride some this week. All depends on work and my legs! We will see!

Diet

This week I did very well avoiding the fast food, which was my main goal for the week. I was able to replace all my lunches with a healthy alternative and didn’t over eat any of it.

Where I struggled was on Saturday night and Super Bowl Sunday. Saturday I went out for a night on the town and had a nice Prime Rib for dinner with 2 beers! It was so good! Sunday I had a few peaces of pizza and 1 beer. So not bad at all compared to other days it was a GREAT week!

Fresh Broccoli From the Garden

So I was walking around my garden today and I noticed that a lot of the broccoli was ready to be harvest. I went to the garden shed and grabbed a pair of cutters and went to town on the broccoli.

I had full intentions of taking the fresh cut greens in and steaming them and adding some lettuce, but I just couldn’t wait, and as I was doing some more work around the garden I just started to eat the broccoli raw.

To my surprise it was quite good. I ate at least a bowl full while working in the garden. Not only was I worn out from the work, but I was full as well! What a bonus!

My Goals

By Dan
Published: February 5th, 2010

I realized today that I have not really set any goals and goals are rather important to staying on track. So I decided I will make some goals!

Weight:
Current: 225lbs
Long Term Goal: 185lbs
Short Term Goal: 200lbs

Measurement (belly at its widest point)

Current: 40”
Long Term Goal: 30”
Short Term Goal: 36”

Running (average mile time)

Current: 10.5 minutes
Long Term Goal: 7 minutes
Short Term Goal: 9 minutes

I don’t really have a time frame set for my long-term goals. They are just the numbers I want to reach in time. I would guess it will take about a year to a year and half to reach these goals if I am aggressive!

Short-term goals are set on a 3 month time frame. I hope to make all of them, and I am making them challenging intentionally to keep me working hard!

Day 5 – Another 2 Miles

By Dan
Published: February 5th, 2010

I woke up with the hunger to run today! It is the first time that I wanted to run in a long, long time! So I got out of bed, ate a banana, drank some water and started to stretch. As I was stretching I realized I haven’t really set any goals yet!

So I figured I would set an average mile time goal. But first I had to figure out what times I am running now!

So I got out of the house and ran 2 miles.

My legs are sore from starting to run again this week, but I felt good otherwise.

I ran 2 miles in 21 minutes. That is an average of 10.5 minutes per mile. Not bad if you are running a marathon! HAHA.

So now its time to figure out what my goals are!

Day 4

By Dan
Published: February 4th, 2010

Today was a challenge for me. I woke up a little later than I wanted to 9:30ish and was not hungry at all. Come lunchtime I was a bit hungry so I had a burrito and a salad. Maybe I should not have had the burrito, but if I deprive myself completely this early on I will never be able to stick to the plan.

So for dinner I am going to make a fresh mushroom tortellini to make up for lunch. I will eat that and a salad and drink a lot of water!

I am pretty much giving up on this Sunday! It has always been planned to be my rest/cheat day, but this Sunday is the Superbowl and I will be at my friends house to watch it. I know that there will be tons of bad, but delicious food there and lots of beer!

I will try to avoid the food as much as possible and limit my beer intake! We will see how that works!

Day 3 Lunch

By Dan
Published: February 3rd, 2010

Didn’t wake up on time for a true breakfast so I decided to move lunch up a little bit. After running 2 miles and showering I was quite hungry, so I steamed up some vegetables!

”Weight

This is my 3rd day in a row that I have been able to avoid fast food, my old go-to lunch! While I haven’t had anything to exciting for lunch yet, it has been far healthier!

Day 3 – 2 Miles

By Dan
Published: February 3rd, 2010

I woke up this morning with sore legs from running 2 miles on Day 1, but I was not going to let that stop me! So I stretched for about 15 minutes then hit the road.

The first ¼ mile felt fine, but then at the ½ mile mark my legs let me know just how out of shape I am. I felt like it was the first time running in my life! So I slowed my pace quite a bit for the next ¼ mile.

At the ¾ mile mark my legs were really feeling it so I decided to walk to the 1-mile mark.

“It is only a 2 mile run, what am I doing walking” I thought to myself!

I then remembered how long it had been since I ran for exercise and started to change back to a positive mindset and finished walking the ¼ mile. It was just what I needed!

I was able to jog the remaining mile with out stopping. There was a bit of soreness in my legs, but I was determined to finish!

Total Ran: 2 Miles*
